Post-Operation Instructions

  • Avoid rubbing or squeezing eye(s). In some cases and as advised by Dr. Poer, you may wear protective eye gear at night to avoid contact. It may also be helpful to wear sunglasses during the daytime, especially outside, to avoid discomfort from bright light.
  • Use eye drops as directed. If eye drops are prescribed for recovery, please use as directed. To apply:
    • Wash hands
    • Tilt your head to look at the ceiling
    • Gently pull the lower eyelid down to form a small pocket
    • Squeeze the bottle or dropper to release a single drop, being careful not to bring the bottle in contact with any part of your eye.
    • Release lid and close eye for 30 seconds.
  • If you are using more than one type of drops and/or ointment, wait 5 minutes between treatments.
  • Avoid splashing water directly into the eye. When washing face or showering, do not splash or let water run over face. For the first few days, wet a clean, soft towel to gently wash your face.
  • Avoid makeup.  We generally recommend that patients avoid eye makeup for 6 weeks after surgery if possible.
  • Do not drive until directed by Dr. Poer.
  • Expect some normal symptoms over the next 6-8 weeks: slight redness, mild watering, mild irritation, and mild bruising and swelling. All symptoms will be closely monitored as part of your post-surgical follow-up appointment(s).
  • Contact Dr. Poer's office if you experience severe symptoms: pain, injury, or decrease in vision. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY CALL (317)582.1118 OR (800)899.3937: OUR OFFICE LINE IS ANSWERED 24 HOURS A DAY (DAY OR NIGHT) TO ASSIST YOU WITH EMERGENT RETINA PROBLEMS.
